When we first decided to get married, we knew we would have a long engagement as we wanted to save up and get a house etc first. We took our time, therefore, in choosing our perfect venue. We spent a year sporadically visiting venues and getting together an idea of what we were really looking for. We shortlisted the following as essentials.
* Countryside venue with overnight accomodation for guests
* Beautiful grounds and high standard of inside decor
* Food and drink under £50 a head
* Staff who made us feel special
We toured majority of Central Scotland in that year, searching to no avail, and then a woman in work suggested we visit Lochside House in New Cumnock, as she had just been to a wedding there and raved about it. We had our reservations as it was over an hour from our hometown, but decided to check it out anyway.
We drove down one Sunday in February 2007, and fell in love with the outside instantly. It was picturesque, sat happily between two lochs with beautifully manicured grounds. The manager Robert showed us around and gave us a run down of the day but offered us alternative options wherever possible so we could make choices about what we wanted (something we had found seemed to be a problem for many venues). He spent two hours showing us around, where we fell in love with the ceremony room overlooking the loch, the beautiful function suite where we would have our meal, and the exsquisitely decorated bedroom suites, including the African themed honeymoon suite. He then offered us a complimentary meal to sample the food - which was out of this world. Our 4 course meal choice and 4 drinks worked out at £44 a head!
They had one Saturday left in July 2010 - the 10th - we provisionally booked that day, and brought our parents down the following Sunday - where Robert spent a further two hours with us showing them around and answering many many questions.
Over the 3.5 years that we waited for our wedding, we visited Lochside several times for meals, to show our family and for their wedding shows to look for local suppliers. I have to say that every time we went, we were treated like royalty by ever member of staff, some of whom started to recognise us and chatted away to us.
Lynsey the wedding co-ordinator was an absolute life saver. From taking my ridiculously long emails about various complicated dietary requirements for guests in her stride, to being the one who fixed my dress after a hoop malfunction ten minutes before the ceremony, she was calm, collected but also cared! She always, always made time to speak to us, always remembered us and is such a genuinly lovely person I never had any qualms about trusting her fully with the most special day of my life.
On the day, everything went like clockwork. The staff were fantastic, Lynsey was totally on the ball, and the surroundings were just perfect.
We arrived at the hotel at around 11.30am, with some of our guests and almost all the rooms were ready for us to check in and change, which was wonderful as many of our guests had travelled a long way.
I cannot imagine having gotten married anywhere else - the ceremony room is the most beautiful one I have ever seen. Our guests were fed and watered whilst the photos took place, and Lynsey even ran up to my room to get my garter, which I had forgotten to put on!
Our guests were all taken care of wonderfully, but subtley. Dietary requirements were remembered and dealt with professionally, and the food was completely out of this world.
I cannot fault this venue in any way at all, from the surroundings, building, decor and suites to the wonderful staff and excellent service - I cannot recommend it enough! We were the fourth wedding is as many days but never once did we feel like we were on a conveyor belt, or any less special. I felt like the most special bride there ever was, and never had the sense that I was 'just another bride'.
