Lynsey & James - 3rd July 2010

Review

In May 2009, my boyfriend surprised me with a tip to Milan completely out of the blue. During this trip, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. And so started a year of talking colors, seating charts & possible first dance songs. Firstly though, we had to find a venue to hold our reception. We sat down one night and drew up a list of possible locations starting in the city centre working our way out. First on the list to see was The National Piping Centre. We arrived for a meeting and were instantly impressed. The manager, Rob, sat with us in the reception and got to know us as a couple. There was no hard sell and we weren't put under any pressure at all. After being given a tour of the building and shown exactly how our day would flow, we both knew there and then that this was the only location we wanted to see. We booked then and there for the following July.

When we told our families where we had booked, they were intrigued as it wasn't your bog standard hotel wedding reception. The staff were more than happy to throw open their doors to us to allow us to show our families around and get their opinions. We never heard any complaints from them which must of been a first! The general manager Gemma & her staff were all very helpful in planning our big day. They were always on hand to answer any questions we had and none of our requests were too big for them. We opted to go with one of their wedding packages which was fantastic value for money. This included drinks for all our guests on arrival, a 3 course meal inc tea & coffee and an evening buffet. Table linen, candles, name cards & menus were also included which was a huge weight off our shoulders. We were given a very simple form to fill out with our plans on which allowed the staff to design the day exactly to our needs. All too quickly, the year had passed and we were ready to step into our finery and make it all official.

The night before the big day, i packed the groom & best man off to stay in the venue's hotel. They were very well looked after and the staff made sure they were presentable before leaving for the church which i'm eternally grateful for as goodness knows what state they would have shown up in. After saying our vows at our local church, our guests made their way to the reception while we went to get photos taken at St Nicholas Garden behind Glasgow's Oldest House. When we finally arrived at our reception to the sounds of a piper, our guests were enjoying a drinks reception in the Museum of Piping and mingling merrily. We were greeted at the door and shown in to our guests. The place was immaculate and not a dirty glass in sight despite having 90 or so people there. The building made for a beautiful back drop for photos and our photographer managed to utilize the stairs at the front for some group shots.

When time came for the meal, our guests were led upstairs to the auditorium to be seated. The tables were laid our and decorated perfectly. We opted for flowers in thin tall vases. As the ceiling were so tall these worked perfectly. Once everyone was seated, we were piped into our seats. We opted to purchase extra Prosecco for the speeches which we felt added that extra bit of sparkle to the day. After the speeches, the meal was very swift at getting served. Our starter was Tomato & Basil soup. I had requested the childrens starter of Melon and this was brought to me with no fuss. The whole room was served very quickly which allowed us all to eat at the same time. For main, we had Chicken Supreme or Veggie Haggis. Some of our guests who had traveled from outwith Scotland were very excited at being given the chance to try Haggis. All the food was of the highest quality and wouldn't be out of place being served in a restaurant. Traditional Scottish dessert of Cranachan was served followed by teas & Coffee. The whole thing was perfect.

After dinner, we were shown back downstairs to the museum which allowed us to catch up with our guests. Everyone was full of glowing reports on their meals and were in good spirits for the night ahead. In the blink of an eye, the room was ready for us to start our disco in. The auditorium had been transformed from a dining room for 90 to a dance floor for our 120 guests. Our cake had been displayed in the middle of the room and allowed all of our guests the perfect opportunity to witness its cutting. From that, we were led into our first dance (we had eventually opted for "In A Little While" by U2). The dance floor never emptied once during the whole night. A small bar in the auditorium was perfect as it meant our guests were leaving the party to get drinks. Our included buffet of breakfast rolls went down a storm and our guests piled their plates high. Having the hotel on site was a great bonus to this venue. We managed to drag ourselves off to bed at the end of the night without a care in the world.

The following morning, me met with some of our guests in the restaurant for breakfast. The staff had arranged all our flowers, gifts & seating plan for us to easily take home with us.

From start to finish, we felt very special indeed. We have returned on various occasions for meals and each time, we're made to feel as though we are part of their family. My only wish with this venue, is that i could do it all again and i wouldn't change a thing!
